Gait analysis Running analysis

Gait analysis (also referred to as running analysis motion analysis or biomechanics)

Whether as an activity on it’s own or a component of your sports, running has a crucial role in the practice of most sports disciplines.

By working in a variety of sports at different levels of performance we have gathered a wealth of knowledge in analysing applied running movement whether you are an experienced road runner, a field sports player or an individual sport competitor.

Maximising your performance is our ultimate goal. We therefore recommend our clients to benefit from a thorough analysis of their running technique when there is a need to:

  • identify biomechanical faults – i.e. incorrect patterns of movement when you run – leading to overuse injuries (e.g. anterior knee pain, shin splints, Achilles Tendon pain), hamper recovery from injury; or limit your performance
  • improve your running technique, run with greater control  to avoid early fatigue
  • improve your running economy – i.e. the amount of energy you spend to run a set distance – and therefore maximising your performance;
  • assess the effectiveness of your new or old running shoes in order to make sure that they suit your running style and are appropriate to your sport.

What to bring on the day: your training gear, your new (> 6 months) and old  running shoes, insoles/orthotics (where applicable), your training diary, your usual work/daytime footwear.

We analyse your running on a treadmill either at a pre-set or at your preferred pace by filming you through different cameras placed in front, on the back and by side.

Movement patterns are studied in greater detail by manipulating various factors (speed, inclination, footwear,etc). We then take a look frame by frame to reveal movement asymmetries or dysfunctions that we can address.

What to do next?

Once we have the relevant issues we will recommend a specific plan of action. This might involve just you or maybe your coach, strength and conditioning coach, your Health Professional (Podiatrist, Physiotherapist, Sports Massage Therapist). The aim will be to effectively restore optimal function of the different systems involved (biomechanics, movement control, core stability, flexibility to name a few).

We recommend your running to be reviewed regularly to check progress and allow a full resumption of your training regime, fully equipped with self-management tools.
