Childrens Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Fitness

Childhood sports injuries, strains and sprains from rough and tumble may be inevitable and all part of growing up. Some other things that our children experience or that we observe are not so simple for a parent to explain and naturally cause concern.

To provide the right physiotherapy for children requires specialist knowledge and experience - something available in abundance here:

  • Children are not just small adults - they grow very quickly and their bodies are still developing.
  • Sports and traumatic injuries in children need to be managed differently.
  • it is essential to a childs progression that they are kept motivated and develop a positive attitude towards their treatment and training.
  • Sessions are creative, fun, interesting and something to look forward to.

How Balance's paediatric physiotherapy services will help your child:

  • Professionals with specialist knowledge and experience provide the highest quality of care and treatment to help your child reach their goals
  • A treatment plan is agreed between all present and specifically designed for the child. It may involve a home exercise programme but it will be under the careful guidance of our specialists and parents/guardian will understand the emphasis and intention of it whilst supervising.
  • Children are motivated enough to return and work towards their independence
  • Children are encouraged and guided towards adopting a fit, strong and healthy lifestyle. Parents will learn strategies and lead by example  to ensure adequate exercise a healthy attitude to eating, and appropriate amounts of time are dedicated to “running around/rolling around” as well as more organised activity.

Areas where physiotherapy can help a child:

  • Musculo-skeletal - Osgood Sclatter's disease, flat feet, sprains & strains, back pain, knee pain, post- fracture, recurrent dislocation.
  • Neuro-developmental - Developmental delay, Cerebral Palsy, Neuromuscular disorders, gait abnormalities.
  • Heart and lung conditions.

Children’s Podiatry (Podopaediatrics)

The growing body undergoes a series of developmental changes during childhood and adolescence that can result in a wide variety of symptoms. These can range from night pains that don’t always follow a particularly strenuous day, severe heel ‘bruising’ after sport or your child trips frequently and wants to be carried a lot. Whilst some children will simply grow out of their pains, others can endure long periods away from their favourite activities.
Many lower limb problems in children are biomechanically related. Our podiatrists have an in-depth understanding of this area of practice and can help improve the quality of life for both our patients and their families.

Common complaints include:
•    Flat feet
•    Heel pain
•    Knee pain
•    Knock knees / Tripping
•    Tiredness
•    In-toeing (pigeon toed)
•    Growing pains
•    Uneven shoe wear

Fitness for children

At Balance we dont believe in childrens gyms but we do believe that the opportunity for young children to develop habits that will provide a long, full, healthy and rewarding life is one not to be missed.

The majority of children will be seen at Balance Performance Physiotherapy's excellent facilities. We have space to move and plenty of balls, toys and rehabilitation equipment to make the process of recovery fun as well as effective.

It may be appropriate, on occasions, to assess and treat some children either in their own home or in a setting more relevant to their condition.
